New house in the burbs

After a month or so of looking at old, characterful and eventually disappointing houses, we came upon a brand new house near Mclean town centre which had come up for rent. The house is very large and we are luxuriating in the extra space. We effectively have a basement lounge and a proper lounge, which is the standard thing in these parts but it is a little comical as most of the stuff from our loft apartment fits into just one of them.

Living in suburbia was a choice we approached with quite a bit of apprehension but now that we are here it has been quite ok. There's a little sushi bar in town, a few decent eateries round the corner, and we've popping into the city regularly which is only a few minutes drive away. It's not the same as having restaurants at your doorstep, but it's a very easy next step from that.

The new house is also very convenient for my new job - after we shelved our New York plans I did some job hunting and was very fortunate to find that the innovation lab at Gannett (owners of USA Today and various local papers and news stations) were hiring.  It's a department that operates like a startup despite being inside a big corporation.  So far it's been very interesting and enjoyable, which has been a very pleasant surprise.  We've been working with a company called IDEO, who I've been aware of and interested in working with for a long time.  Gannett is in the same media world that Si works in, so we might be able to trade insights (or maybe I'll just be learning from him!).

If you're looking for more pics of the new house check out my photo feed (scroll to the bottom).  I've been meaning to make a quick video tour which I'll post up here when I get to it...

Partly as an experiment in food blogging for a work project, I've set up a new blog which will be about my experience of moving to Mclean.  It won't replace this blog but you might want to take a look at that too:  221ohh1
